ALGER PARK/ASH CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION (APAC N.A) – GENERAL MEETING MINUTES – JUNE 7, 2008 – DALE’S GARDEN
President Brad Boling convened the general meeting at 8:12 a.m.
CITY OF DALLAS WATER-WISE TOUR/ALGER PART/ASH CREEK GARDEN TOUR
The meeting preceded the 2nd Annual APAC N.A. Garden/Artist Tour, to begin at 9:00 a.m. There are 8 homes on the tour this year as well as a plant sale at Mimi Jernigan’s house located at 9927 Coldwater Circle. Additionally, Karen Schwab’s father will give a floral demonstration from 12-3 p.m. at Gayla Russell’s house.
Brad stated that the APAC N.A had begun xeriscaping Dale’s Garden in the last two months under the helm of Scott Heiger and Gary Anderson and other volunteers. We decided to go the xeriscaping route because we lost our water source after the neighbor who had been letting us use his water moved. Scott stated that we may have to water some of the plants in order to get them established.
Scott said that he did not enter Dale’s Garden into the city-wide waterwise contest because he wanted the garden to experience one more year of growth.
Brad said that approximately 300 people came through for last year’s garden tour.
Brad also announced that The Dallas Morning News featured a story about our garden tour in the paper this morning. He also stated that The White Rocker featured our garden tour and that The Advocate was supposed to feature it as well.
After the garden tour, Brad announced that he and Curtis were hosting a wine party at their house, from 7 p.m –until, for everyone to relax and meet their neighbors.
“PARTY IN THE PARK” – SATURDAY, MAY 31, 2008
This was an unstructured/ unsponsored event held in Jones Park. People brought their own grills, chairs, etc. and just hung out in the park. Brad announced that we are thinking about doing it again later in the year. Karen said that approximately 20 people came from the neighborhood. However, many people did not show up until 6:00 p.m., and those who arrived earlier left because they saw no one in the park. Brad also mentioned that Chris and Kristin Simpson will have an ice cream social at their house sometime in September.
DRINKING FOUNTAIN IN JONES PARK
Brad said that we are still dealing with the City Parks Dept. on this issue. One representative from the Parks Dept. says that that the city will not provide half the funds, but our city councilman, Sheffie Kadane, says that the city will provide half. Brad stated that we should have further information next month. Josh Weaver, APAC N.A. vice–president, is working on this issue to keep the city from placing it on the backburner.
Someone asked about the plumbing for the fountain, and Brad stated that it is already there. The city will put in a slab and maintain it for years to come.
Lynne Moon asked about the pavilion that is to be placed in Jones Park by the city. Brad said that the money for it was voted on by the citizens in the last bond package and that it will probably take 3-4 years for the pavilion to be installed.
FERGUSON ROAD INITIATIVE
Brad announced that the APAC N.A. is now a part of the Ferguson Road Initiative and we are included in their map now. The initiative used to stop at Buckner Blvd.
Brad adjourned the meeting at 8:27 a.m.
