ALGER PARK/ASH CREEK (APAC) NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION - GENERAL MEETING MINUTES – NOVEMBER 19, 2009 – W.H. GASTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
Brad Boling, President, called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.
CINDY DAVIS, DALLAS COUNTY MASTER GARDENER
Cindy Davis, a Dallas County Master Gardener, was the guest speaker. Ms. Davis spoke about rain harvesting, and stated that collected water should be used to water everything but grass. The formula for collecting rain water is: square footage of the house x inches of rain x .0625. One gallon of rain hits one square foot. Ms. Davis also mentioned that Texas has enacted a law that makes materials for rain harvesting tax free, but the buyer must tell the seller that rain harvesting is the purpose of purchasing the materials. A rain harvesting system must also be opaque and closed.
SPOOKTACULAR RESULTS
Jane Henderson, treasurer, reported that our beginning balance on October 31, 2009, the date of the Spooktacular, was $3,400.00. We deposited $1,820.00 from the Spooktacular. After expenses, we will clear $1,425.95. Jane also reported 48 paid members, with 8 new members since the Spooktacular.
CRIMEWATCH
Jerry Jensen, Crime Watch chairperson, reported about the continuous incidents involving school kids from W.H. Gaston stopping and accosting neighbors in their cars in the middle of the street. Jerry said that the kids have been identified.
NEW NEIGHBORHOOD SIGNS
Brad reported that Edwina Dye graciously gave a donation for new neighborhood signs. We will change to new signs by the beginning of the year. The cost of the signs will be $84.00 for 10 signs, printed on both front and back.
AREA EVENTS
Brad announced that, for the first time, there will be a WinterFest at Norbuck Park on Buckner Blvd. on December 5, 2009, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

NEW 1-DAY GARBAGE SCHEDULE
Brad reminded everyone that our neighborhood will go to once a week garbage pick-up beginning in March 2010. Workshops will be held by all city councilpersons regarding this issue. The first workshop for our neighborhood will be on January 4, 2010, at Harry Stone Recreation Center, and will be hosted by our city councilman Sheffie Kadane and councilwoman Carolyn Davis.
HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST
Brad announced that APAC will again sponsor a neighborhood holiday decorating contest. However, this year, instead of various theme categories, there will be 3 general winners who will receive prizes. The judging will take place by APAC board members from December 18th through the 27th, and the winners will be announced at the next APAC meeting.
